One of the things that I’m truly a master at is beating myself up.
Regardless of how successful I’ve been in business, whenever I would make a mistake I’d start calling myself names like “stupid,” “idiot” and “moron.”
Now, how long I did this to myself depended on the size of the actual mistake.
A small one would usually be over by the end of the day. A large one could last months.
But two years ago my then-6 year old daughter Lila did something that literally blew my mind…and changed my life in the process.

The 3 Solution Rule to Managing Every Employee

One of my cardinal rules in business is what I call the “3 Solution Rule.”
I tell everyone that works for me not to come to me with any problem unless they have 3 possible solutions to that problem.
What I’ve come to learn by doing this is that the very process of coming up with 3 solutions often leads to the person coming up with the solution to the problem themselves.

2 Types of Employees that Work for You

In my experience there are two types of employees that will work for you – people who put stuff on your plate and people who take stuff off your plate.
The key for me used to be to give new employees assignments to learn as quickly as possible which type of person they were.
But over the years I’ve come to learn that my life and my business runs downhill instead of uphill when I focus on just attracting and keeping the ones who are good at taking stuff off my plate.

I’ve come to believe that at the end of the day there are two types of people in business – those who say ” I Can’t” and those who say “How Can I?”
The only difference between you and the person sitting in the chair you want (i.e. your boss or competitor) is that they know how to ask themselves “How Can I?”
